“A Shining Light Across America” Unites Entire Scouting Community in Celebration
As part of our ongoing 100th Anniversary Celebration, Yocona Area Council will join Scouting organizations across the country for the historic “A Shining Light Across America” broadcast on July 31, 2010.
“A Shining Light Across America” marks the first time in BSA history that the entire Scouting community—past, present, and future—will have the opportunity to join together and experience the inspirational Centennial Celebration Show from the National Scout Jamboree via Webcast and satellite broadcast technologies.
We hope you’ll join our Yocona Area Council “Shining Light” event at “The Grove” at the University of Mississippi from 2:00pm to 10:00pm, where you can experience a variety of Scouting activities and entertainment leading up to the inspirational “Shining Light” nationwide broadcast at 8 p.m. EST.
“This is truly a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Scouting friends and family, and the entire Yocona Area Council community, to come together in celebration of Scouting, its rich heritage, exciting present, and bright future,” said Brian Steger, Scout Executive.
Yocona Area Council’s event will be one of hundreds of “Shining Light” events taking place across the country in venues large and small on July 31. A few select locations will also be able to transmit their unique “Shining Light” activities back to the National Scout Jamboree arena that evening.
“This event will not only shine a positive light on Scouting throughout our community,” said Steger, “It will also allow us to build pride in our membership base, provide an opportunity to demonstrate the relevance of Scouting today, and give us a venue to showcase the passion and reach of our organization.”
For more information, please contact Robby Parman at 662-842-2871, jparman@bsamail.org to learn how you can be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration! More...
Fall Recruting Campaign
As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, the essence of Scouting is clear and best expressed by the 12 principals of the Scout Law. These truly are words to live by. They differentiate Scouting from all other activities for kids, young adults, and their families. They guide progression from Tiger Cubs to Eagle Scouts to remarkable adults. We are excited about the new recruiting campaign and the chance to get many young people and families involved with Scouting. Words to live by will energize everyone and give you the right tools to find and create tomorrow’s leaders.

Cub Scouts 2010
Why would you ever change a good thing? To make it better of course! Cub Scouts 2010 is the new delivery method for Cub Scouting. This is not a change to the program or content of Cub Scouts just a change in how we present it to our boys. Cub Scouts 2010 has been piloted and tested for several years and has shown fantastic results. Many of you may have already tried the program piloted as “Fast Tracks.” This new delivery method makes den meetings more organized, more fun, increases advancement and retention rates all while simplifying the planning process for leaders. So what do you need to get started? The only completely new resource you will need is the Den and Pack Meeting Resource Guide. This guide contains simple easy to follow lessons plans for every single meeting you have during the year! You can purchase guides for den leaders, or buy the guide and split it up between your dens, and download extra copies of the lesson plans from www.scouting.org – Volunteer – Scoutsource. Youth Protection Policy Upgrades
To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies. Effective June 1, Youth Protection Training became required for all adult leaders. The training must be completed before registration or rechartering and is good for two years. Leaders who have not completed the training will be unable to register. To take the training login to your MyScouting account and select “E-Learning.” New leaders will need to create an account first, which can be done without a registration number, and updated later. Unit Leaders, you can also search the status of your leader’s Youth Protection Training using their MyScouting user name or registration number and selecting Training Verification. If you are unable to take training online contact your District Executive or District Training Chairman for other options.
BeAScout.org
Set to launch on July 23rd, the BSA has created a new website to make finding a scout unit near you easier then ever before. Beascout.org uses Google map technology to mark local scout units. Visitors to the site simply type their address into the space provided, choose the program they are interested in (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Volunteer) and hit “Go.” A few seconds later a map pops up with a listing of the 20 closet units to their location! Pretty cool but it gets even better. As a Unit Committee Chairman or Top Unit Leader you can go on MyScouting and edit the information shown. Put the address and times of your meeting locations, change your contact information, leave special announcements and more. Visitors to the site can fill out a form and you will be contacted with their information. (Just in case your are not computer savvy the default settings send visitors to the council for more information so you will not be left out.) Updating your units information is easy. Top level unit leaders login in your MyScouting account and select “Be A Scout” from the menu. For detailed instructions go to www.scouting.org/volunteer and click “Be A Scout Webinar Presentation” in the Quick links bar.
Fall Product Sale
We are excited to announce that this year’s product sale will be through the Campmaster Program. We know that many Units did not have a great outcome on their fundraising efforts last year. This company will offer a much better product, at a more reasonable price, that will give a better opportunity for Scouts to fundraise this year. You will have an opportunity to see all of these products at your Popcorn Kickoff on September 7th.
Yocona International Folk Festival
This August 3rd – 8th your scout unit is invited to participate in the Yocona International Folk Festival. This event is a great opportunity for Citizenship in the World merit badge and Summer Time Pack Awards. The folk festival brings authentic folk musicians and dancers from countries all over the world to perform in venues across north Mississippi for a week; educating our children in free culture workshops; preserving traditional intangible cultures; developing heritage and cultural tourism; and building cultural understanding and awareness to promote world peace and prosperity. The festival will come to several cities around our council giving you several opportunities to participate. The festival is coming to Tupelo’s Link Centre on August 7th and to Oxford on August 8th. ANOTHER FANTASTIC YEAR FOR CAMP YOCONA!!!!
This was another banner year for Cub Resident Camp. There were several pirates roaming around Cub Resident Camp. The Scouts, Leaders, and Staff got to experience a camp of fun and fellowship that they will never forget. We would like to thank all the volunteers who assisted with Camp this year. Without your participation there would have been no Cub Resident Camp. It is very exciting to see the excitement on the Scouts’ faces and we look forward to see what Cub Resident will have to offer next year.
What a great summer it has been for Camp at the beautiful Camp Yocona. This was another record setting year for Camp Yocona with camping up to 600 Scouts in June. We would like to extend Thanks to all the scouts and leaders that choose Camp Yocona as their camp this summer. The 2010 Boy Scout summer camp theme “Celebrate the Adventure” highlighted Camp Yocona’s dedication to remain one of the premier camps in the region. We would like to thank J. P. Nix, John Ray and Matthew Williams for their hard work at camp this summer as well as the Camp Staff.
