Throughout the world and right here at home there are people going hungry. Here in Northeast Mississippi, food pantries are in vital need of more food items to try and meet the demand of people in need. The Boy Scouts of America recognized this need and established a program called Scouting for Food. In the past, Scouts have gone door to door collecting food which made it extremely hard to collect a large number of items. So a new idea was devised last year that involved donations at the Reed’s Christmas Parade. The Boy Scouts are happy to say that we are planning on continuing the program this year and are very excited to be the Grand Marshalls of the Reed’s Christmas Parade. Each person participating in the parade, as well as people in the audience, are asked to bring a can of food. We will have several stations for the people that are in the parade to drop off their food, and we will be in the parade to pick up the food from people watching. We have also added a new twist to this year’s program. We are asking several schools, civic organizations, businesses, etc. to participate by designating a certain time period to collect can goods. When all the food has been collected, you will have someone from the Boy Scouts to pick up the items. All the food collected will go to the Salvation Army where it will be distributed to local food pantries. To participate, just bring your canned goods to the Reed's Christmas Parade. Scouts across Northeast Mississippi are participating in Scouting for Food this year. Contact your local scout unit or the Yocona Area Council at 662-842-2871 to find out other ways to give.
